A World in Motion (AWIM) will expand next year, when engineers will work with students in 29 fifth grade classrooms and 21 middle school classrooms. Fifth grade students will design Jet Toy cars, while middle school students will be working with Fuel Cell cars. Students will design cars, change variables, conduct trial runs, and record data. The vision for the program is to give all students in Farmington two experiences with AWIM before they enter high school.
“It is an extraordinary opportunity for our students to work directly with volunteers from a global engineering company. Our ultimate goal is to encourage and inspire students to pursue careers related to the sciences, specifically, engineering,” said Kathy Koperski, sixth grade science teacher/student council coordinator at Warner Middle School. Koperski has worked with the team at Bosch since AWIM’s inception to ensure that students continue to have access to and experience with hands-on, STEM-based (Science Technology Engineering Math) engineering. The program has been so successful it has expanded each year since it was established.
Since all AWIM programs are sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), all programs and activities utilize Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core Standards.
